The black wave is a painting using a high contrast between the darks of the sea and the whites of the sea foam. This painting is painted from memory but reminiscent of a windy and brightly lit day by the sea. There is an emphasis on the energy of the breaking of the wave with splashes of colour that liven up the composition. Initially painted with acrylic inks that dries quickly the painting is then sealed and then overpainted with oils. The inks lend itself to transparency with layers of translucent glazes giving depth to the darker colours and the oil paint allows for more detail to the whites and lighter areas in the painting. I try to paint spontaneously and spend time looking at the painting and deciding in my "minds eye" where the next mark is going to be made, then working rapidly so that the marks retain the energy of the gesture.
