Originally from Portsmouth, Gee studied at Camberwell and Wimbledon before moving to the Thames Estuary in Essex. His small-scale works are imbued with a similarly itinerant quality, drawing on influences as broad-reaching as Northern Renaissance painting, Folk Art, and the literary works of Swiss-German writer Herman Hesse.
In fact, Gee’s paintings inspire the imagination to an almost literary degree; shrouded in blueish hues and naïve in manner, his — largely historical — subjects are evoked in such a way as to render them simultaneously intriguing and familiar. Equally, the silence and solitude that thematises his works is conducive to private reflection, providing an intimate platform from which the imagination can run wild.
